| Non Speed Events - The following events are normally advertised in the Saturday edition of the Geelong Advertiser in the "Used Car" section under "MGCC". |
Early Morning Runs (EMR's) - Enthusiasts are required to meet at a designated meeting place, often Balyang Sanctuary, at a predetermined time. The assembled cars leave en mass for a breakfast destination. This event is an ideal way to enjoy your MG and meet with other club members. Points are not earned for this event. Generally held each 3rd Sunday of the month. |
Economy Run - A self-explanatory event, as a test of fuel consumption, but certainly not simply a Sunday drive. Driver skill and cunning, car tune and roll resistance are of paramount importance in deciding placings. A set route on public roads is predetermined. A barbecue / picnic lunch is held at a check point, and later a rendezvous, checking of distance and fuel consumption allows a result which is determined on a kilometers per litre basis. A great social day, run as a competition event usually on club Competition Weekend. |
Treasure Hunt - The classic Treasure Hunt is basically a fun event where competitors are asked to collect items (sometimes absurd) and answer questions - emphasis is usually on fun. This event is not timed. |
Rallies - A rally can be a gathering of the faithful, and need not be competitive (e.g. Picnic Run). The term Rally is often used in the place of the "Trial". An event for the entire family. |
Trials - A classic trial is a test of driving and accurate navigation and is usually timed. Competitors may have to provide answers to prove they have come by the correct route. Points are won and lost for accuracy. Good maps are essential. |
Concours D'Elegance - An annual event attracting members from far and near. The aim is to identify the best presented car in each class and ultimately outright. Condition, authenticity and presentation receive major emphasis. |
Observed Section Trial - These events were introduced to Australia from the MG Motherland in the early 1950's and are designed around the capabilities of our MG's and their drivers. The event consists of cars traversing marked sections of muddy or slippery surfaces; steep or otherwise, difficult terrain. The object of each competitor is to traverse the whole of each section, nonstop, from a standing start, without departing from the marked course, or hitting any of the markers en route. Points are awarded for the number of markers reached, and the test is to maintain traction and control under difficult conditions. Speed or elapsed time is NOT a factor. Varied courses constitute the day's event. No special equipment is required. |
Motorkanas - An event designed to test the acceleration, braking and general control of your MG, and the skill and judgment of it's driver. A series of flags/markers are set out on either grass, dirt, or a sealed surface. The object of the event is for each driver to complete the test in the shortest time without incurring penalties. Although there are many ways of incurring such penalties, some of the most common are: displacing a marker, traveling in the wrong direction (WD), and failing to stop within the finish garage boundaries. Varied event layouts constitute the competition event, and the winners and placings are decided on a total of the elapsed time, per competitor in the tests, including penalties. |
Regularity Trials - A competition conducted on a permanent sealed circuit, with a group of vehicles (MG's) which start simultaneously. Prior to the trial, each driver nominates a time in which she/he expects to complete the predetermined number of flying laps. The driver closest to her/his nominated time becomes the winner. This gives the slowest car an opportunity to compete on equal terms with the faster cars, and provides enjoyment for all. This is not a speed event, but special equipment and scrutineering IS required - see equipment guide. |
| Speed Events Vehicle scrutineering is compulsory for all speed events. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED FOR SPEED EVENTS. Check the Equipment guide. |
Autocross - A single car speed event of less than 2km on a grass and/or unsealed surface. Occasionally combined with sealed surfaces when conducted on a permanent circuit. |
Hillclimb - A single car speed event on a sealed or unsealed surface, usually conducted on a permanent circuit or track. |
Lap Dash Sprint - A single car speed event on a sealed or unsealed surface usually conducted on a permanent circuit or track. |
Quarter Mile Sprint - Usually conducted as a two car event, with cars starting together (in separate lanes). Individual times are recorded. |
Multiple Lap Dash Sprints - A multiple car speed event, similar to a lap dash, conducted on a permanent sealed circuit, in which two vehicles start simultaneously. Elapsed times, NOT relative positions at the finish line determine event placings. |
Racing - Some MG Car Club members participate in race meetings each year. Many other members support these meetings as spectators of officials. A special CAMS racing license is required for circuit racing and there are special requirements for vehicle build and safety equipment. |
